GATE 2024 CS2 Q.54: solution and answer

GATE 2024 · CS2Q.54 · 2 marks · NAT

Consider a TCP connection operating at a point of time with the congestion window of size 12 MSS (Maximum Segment Size), when a timeout occurs due to packet loss. Assuming that all the segments transmitted in the next two RTTs (Round Trip Time) are acknowledged correctly, the congestion window size (in MSS) during the third RTT will be ______

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The congestion window during the third RTT is 4 MSS.

Official answer: 4Source: Official answer key, GATE 2024 CS2 (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. A timeout is a severe loss signal. TCP sets the slow-start threshold to half the window at the time of loss: MSS.

  2. The congestion window is reset to MSS and TCP re-enters slow start.

  3. First RTT after the timeout: the window is MSS. The single segment is acknowledged, so the window doubles to MSS for the next RTT.

  4. Second RTT: the window is MSS. Both segments are acknowledged, so the window doubles to MSS for the next RTT.

  5. Third RTT: the window is MSS. This is below , so TCP is still in slow start and there is no linear growth yet.

  6. So the congestion window during the third RTT is MSS.

KEY IDEA

After a timeout, TCP sets ssthresh to half the old window and restarts slow start from cwnd = 1 MSS, doubling each RTT while below ssthresh: 1, 2, 4 in RTTs 1, 2, 3.

WATCH OUT FOR

Answering 6 (the new ssthresh) or 7 (counting a fast-recovery style halving plus 1), or starting from 12 and growing linearly. A timeout always resets cwnd to 1 MSS, and slow start doubles until ssthresh is reached.
