GATE 2025 EC Q.60: solution and answer
Answer and solution
ANSWER
bits, because and are independent.
Official answer: 0.0Source: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EC (IIT Roorkee)
Marginal of : and .
Marginal of : and .
Mutual information is . Each term is zero when , and exactly when this holds for every pair.
Check each cell: , , , . Every product equals the given joint probability.
So and are independent and every log term is . Hence bits, which is to two decimal places.
KEY IDEA
Mutual information is zero exactly when the joint PMF equals the product of its marginals. Compute the marginals and test this before doing any entropy arithmetic.
WATCH OUT FOR
Computing , and by hand and letting rounding errors leave a small non-zero value. Another slip is to take the joint probabilities as a dependent pair without checking the products of the marginals.
