Answer and solution

ANSWER

The proportional gain is .

Official answer: 4Source: Official answer key, GATE 2023 BT (IIT Kanpur)

  1. A proportional controller gives output . Here is the controller output, is the output when the error is zero (the bias), is the proportional gain and is the error. When the input and the output are both written as a percentage of their spans, has no units.

  2. The proportional band (PB) is the percentage of the measured-variable span that drives the controller output through its full range (0 to 100%).

  3. Span of the measured temperature: .

  4. With PB = 25%, a temperature change of drives the output through 100% of its range.

  5. As a percentage of the input span, that change is . So the gain is

  6. This is the standard relation . The span cancels, so the temperature range does not affect the dimensionless gain. It only fixes how many degrees the 25% band covers ().

KEY IDEA

Proportional band and gain are reciprocals when both are expressed in percent of span: . A 25% band means a quarter of the input span swings the output through its full range, so the gain is 4. The span of the measured variable cancels out.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the temperature range directly. For example, is a gain with units, not the dimensionless gain the question asks for. Other slips are , or reading PB = 25% as (confusing the band with the gain, which is its reciprocal).
