GATE BT Syllabus-to-Question Map: What 2026 Asked
Split at its own semicolons and full stops (never inside a parenthesis), the official GATE 2027 Biotechnology syllabus comes to 167 lines. We matched the 55 subject questions (85 marks) of the GATE 2026 BT paper to 41 of those lines, one line per question; the other 126 lines had no question that year. Two of the 55, Q.45 and Q.47 (4 marks), are fluid-flow questions on a topic no line lists; they are placed under S1-08, the one line that mentions fluid mechanics. The official answer key labels questions only “GA” or “BT”, so we placed each question under a line ourselves; the exam paper does not label topics. This page prints every line with the questions placed under it, and names each question so you can check it against the paper.

Source: Left and middle columns: the official GATE 2027 Biotechnology syllabus PDF, split into 167 items at its own semicolons and full stops (never inside a parenthesis; the PDF leaves one parenthesis in Section 4 unclosed, and it is treated as ending at the next heading), as on 24 September 2026. Right column: our own matching of the GATE 2026 BT question paper on this site, in which questions Q.11 to Q.65 are the subject questions, with marks from the organising institute's official answer key. We placed each question under a syllabus line ourselves: the exam paper does not label topics, and the official answer key labels a question only “GA” or “BT”, never by section. Each question is matched to one line only. Q.45 (the shear stress–shear rate line of a Newtonian fluid) and Q.47 (what the laminar–turbulent transition in a pipe does not depend on) are fluid-flow questions; no syllabus line lists fluid flow as a topic, so both are matched to S1-08, the one line that mentions fluid mechanics. Every row names its question number so you can find it in the paper.
| Paper | Covered here | Why |
|---|---|---|
| GATE 2026 (BT) | Yes: all 55 subject questions matched | Marks from the official answer key |
| GATE 2025, 2024, 2023, 2022 | Not yet | Hosted and readable; queued behind 2026 |
| GATE 2020, 2019 | Not yet | Readable; 2020's questions are printed as images and need reading one by one |
| GATE 2021 | No | The file on this site is an image scan, so no question can be taken from it |
| GATE 2018 | Not yet | The hosted copy is being replaced with the organising institute's own file first |

About this resource
A GATE BT candidate has a syllabus written as a list of topics and a folder of question papers, and the official answer key labels each question only “GA” or “BT”, never by syllabus section. This page joins the two for one paper and one year: each of the 167 items of the official 2027 syllabus (split at its own semicolons and full stops), with the GATE 2026 subject questions matched to it. A line with no 2026 question matched to it says “not asked in 2026”. One year's absence is information too, though it is not proof that GATE never examines the topic. Each question is matched to one line only, so a line that repeats a matched topic can show none (S2-08, “Enzyme kinetics - Michaelis-Menten equation”, carries Q.21 and Q.32, while S4-02, which names “Michaelis-Menten kinetics”, shows none).
We placed each question under a syllabus line ourselves; the exam paper does not label topics. The official answer key labels a question only “GA” or “BT” and never by section. That is why every row names the question number. Open the GATE 2026 BT paper on this site, read the question, and decide for yourself whether the match is right.
One number is worth stating. The brochure allocates 13 of the 100 marks to Engineering Mathematics. Matched this way, Section 1 carries 21 of the 85 subject marks in 2026. Four of those marks are Q.45 and Q.47, fluid-flow questions (the table's note says what each asks). No line of the 2027 BT syllabus lists fluid flow as a topic, the word “flow” appears only in the reactor names “mixed flow and plug flow” and in “Flow cytometry”, so both are matched to S1-08, the one line that mentions fluid mechanics: gradient, divergence and curl “for applications in fluid mechanics, transport processes”. The matches were not moved to make the numbers agree.
What's included
- ✓All 167 lines of the official GATE 2027 BT syllabus, with their section
- ✓Every GATE 2026 BT subject question, matched to a line, with its number and marks
- ✓The 126 syllabus lines that carried no question in 2026, printed rather than omitted
- ✓A coverage table naming the papers not covered here, and why
- ✓The totals: 55 questions and 85 marks
How to use this resource
Read down a section and look at the right-hand column. A line with 2026 questions against it is a line the paper reached that year; a line reading “not asked in 2026” is not a promise it will stay untested.
Check any match you doubt. Open the GATE BT 2026 paper page at /study/papers/bt-2026, find the question number and read it against the line printed beside it.
Treat this as one year, not a pattern. It covers the 2026 paper only, and the coverage table says which others are still to come. Nothing here forecasts 2027.
For solved questions in Section 4 (Fundamentals of Biological Engineering), see /study/biological-engineering; for what changed in the syllabus between 2026 and 2027, see /resources/gate-bt-2027-syllabus-changes.
Frequently asked questions
Which GATE BT sections carry the most marks?+
The brochure fixes one share: Engineering Mathematics carries 13 of the 100 marks. It does not split the other subject marks across Sections 2 to 6, and one paper cannot tell you how they split. Matching each question to a syllabus line ourselves, the 85 subject marks of GATE 2026 BT fell like this: Section 4 (Fundamentals of Biological Engineering) 28; Section 1 (Engineering Mathematics) lines 21, more than the brochure's 13 (the next answer explains part of the gap); Section 2 (General Biology) 16; Section 3 (Genetics, Cellular and Molecular Biology) 12; Sections 5 and 6 four each. One year is a record, not a weightage and not a forecast.
Who decided which syllabus line each question belongs to?+
We placed each question under a syllabus line ourselves; the exam paper does not label topics. The official answer key labels a question only “GA” or “BT”, so any section-level mapping is a judgement call. Every row names the question number so you can check it.
Why does Section 1 show 21 marks when the brochure says Engineering Mathematics is 13?+
Partly because of Q.45 and Q.47 (2 marks each), which the table's note describes as fluid-flow questions. No line of the 2027 BT syllabus lists fluid flow as a topic (“flow” appears only in the reactor names “mixed flow and plug flow” and in “Flow cytometry”); the only one that mentions fluid mechanics is S1-08, gradient, divergence and curl “for applications in fluid mechanics, transport processes”, so that is where they are matched. The other 17 Section 1 marks are on questions matched to mathematics lines. The matches were not moved to make the total agree with the brochure.
Does this cover every GATE BT paper?+
No. This page covers GATE 2026 BT only, and the coverage table names every other year and why it is not here yet. The 2021 file on this site is an image scan, so no question can be taken from it.
Are the answers on this page?+
No. There are no solutions on this page, by design. For each of the 55 GATE 2026 BT subject questions it shows the line of the official GATE 2027 BT syllabus it was matched to (our match, not the organising institute's) and its question number in the paper.
