GATE BT 2027 Syllabus: What Changed

Comparing the official 2026 and 2027 PDFs, the GATE BT 2027 syllabus has no counterpart to the 2026 Bioprocess Engineering and Process Biotechnology section: its Bioreaction Engineering list, from rate law to Damkoehler number, is printed inside Section 4, whose own 2026 list of thermodynamics and transport processes is no longer listed. Section 2 newly lists glycolysis, the Lac operon and cytokines.

Source: the official GATE 2026 Biotechnology (BT) syllabus (IIT Guwahati) and the official GATE 2027 Biotechnology (BT) syllabus (IIT Madras), as on 15 September 2026. Each entry quotes both PDFs. “Not named” means the words do not appear in the 2027 PDF, not that a topic is out of scope.

About this resource

IAE Academy compared the official GATE 2026 Biotechnology (BT) syllabus, published by IIT Guwahati, with the official GATE 2027 BT syllabus, published by IIT Madras, section by section. The table lists what is newly listed in 2027, what is no longer listed by name, what moved between sections, and where only the words attached to an item listed in both years changed.

The structural change is a section fewer: 2026 had seven sections and 2027 has six. Bioprocess Engineering and Process Biotechnology has no 2027 counterpart, and the sections after it are renumbered, 2026's Section 6 is 2027's Section 5, and 2026's Section 7 is 2027's Section 6. Each row of the table names the section number you will find in each PDF, so a row can be checked against either document.

Most of the vanished section is a move, not a cut: its Bioreaction Engineering and Upstream and Downstream Processing lists are printed inside Section 4 in 2027. What genuinely is no longer listed is the 2026 Engineering Principles list in Section 4, material and energy balances, laws of thermodynamics, phase equilibria, and the transport processes list including heat transfer, LMTD and heat exchangers. “Not named” means the 2026 words do not appear in the 2027 PDF; it does not by itself mean the topic is out of scope.

What's included

  • ✓A section-by-section table covering every GATE BT section in both years
  • ✓The 2026 section with no 2027 counterpart, and where its list is printed instead
  • ✓Items newly listed in 2027, and items no longer listed by name
  • ✓Items that moved between sections, and changes to the words attached to an item listed in both years
  • ✓Answers to common questions, each drawn from the table

How to use this resource

Go to the row for the section you want to check. Each row names the section number as each PDF prints it, because the numbering shifted between the two years.

If you are working from a 2026-era study plan, start with the last row, that section no longer exists, and most of what was in it is now inside Section 4.

Read “not named” literally, and check the full 2027 syllabus before treating any topic as gone.

For the complete wording of any item, open the official GATE 2027 syllabus in IAE Academy's Resource Centre.

Frequently asked questions

Is Bioprocess Engineering still a section in the GATE BT 2027 syllabus?+

The 2026 section Bioprocess Engineering and Process Biotechnology has no counterpart in 2027. Its Bioreaction Engineering list, rate law, ideal reactors, Thiele modulus, Damkoehler number, structured and unstructured models, optimization and scale up, is listed in 2027 inside Section 4, Fundamentals of Biological Engineering.

Is heat transfer in the GATE BT 2027 syllabus?+

It does not appear by name in 2027. The 2026 PDF listed conductive and convective heat transfer, LMTD, the overall heat transfer coefficient and heat exchangers under Transport Processes in Section 4. Laws of thermodynamics, phase equilibria and material and energy balances are also not named in 2027.

Is glycolysis in the GATE BT 2027 syllabus?+

Yes, it is newly listed in 2027. Section 2 lists “Detailed pathways like glycolysis, citric acid cycle, and fatty acid oxidation”, which the 2026 PDF did not name. History of Microbiology, Archea and the Lac, Trp and Ara operons are newly listed in the same section.

Is microbial ecology in the GATE BT 2027 syllabus?+

It does not appear by name in 2027. The 2026 Microbiology list named “Microbial Ecology - microbes in marine, fresh water and terrestrial ecosystems” and microbial interactions, and the 2027 PDF names neither. Bacterial cell wall composition, Gram positive and Gram-negative bacteria and two-component systems are newly listed instead.

Is downstream processing in the GATE BT 2027 syllabus?+

Yes, it is listed in both years. Upstream and Downstream Processing sits inside Section 4 in 2027, where the 2026 PDF printed it under Bioprocess Engineering and Process Biotechnology. Within it, pressure, temperature and flow measurement devices do not appear by name in 2027, which prints “Measurement devices” instead.
