What's new in GATE 2027
The GATE 2027 cycle
IIT Madras organises GATE 2027: 30 papers, a new Robotics and Automation paper, TF folded into XE as XE9, new XE/XH/XL codes, and a revised syllabus.

The main changes for GATE 2027 are listed on one page of the Information Brochure. IIT Madras is the organising institute, and the official website is https://gate2027.iitm.ac.in. There are 30 test papers, all conducted as Computer Based Tests, all in English. Four items on that highlights page are new for 2027. Robotics and Automation (RA) is a new test paper. Textile Engineering and Fibre Science (TF) is no longer a standalone paper: it becomes a section of the XE sectional paper, XE9. The paper codes for the three sectional papers — XE, XH and XL — have changed. And the brochure states that the syllabus of GATE 2027 test papers has been revised and advises candidates to check it, which is what the second half of this post is about.

TF is still examinable, inside XE
Textile Engineering and Fibre Science is still examinable. The brochure's wording is that the TF paper “will be a part of XE sectional paper (i.e., XE9: Textile Engineering & Fibre Science) from GATE 2027”. Its syllabus is printed in the brochure's own syllabus appendix under XE9, beginning with Section XE9.1, Textile Fibres. What changed is where it sits: a candidate who would previously have applied for TF now applies for XE, in which applicants select at most two of the sections XE1 to XE9 during the exam, alongside the common section XE0.

The new paper: Robotics and Automation (RA)
Apart from the General Aptitude section, the RA test paper consists of two parts: Part A, carrying 60 marks, and Part B, carrying 25 marks. Part A is common to all candidates. Part B contains Part B1 (Electrical) and Part B2 (Mechanical), and the brochure says the choice between them can be made during the examination — not locked in at application time, as it is for the Geology and Geophysics paper. Part A is 39 questions: 18 carrying one mark each and 21 carrying two marks each. Part B1 and Part B2 are 16 questions each: 7 carrying one mark and 9 carrying two marks. With General Aptitude at 15 marks, the paper totals 100.

Three details about RA that are easy to miss
- Section-wise score and ranking will not be provided for RA. The brochure gives that facility to the Geology and Geophysics (GG) and Humanities and Social Sciences (XH) papers, and names Architecture and Planning (AR), Robotics & Automation (RA) and Geomatics Engineering (GE) among the papers that do not get it.
- RA is not in the list of papers where 13 of the 85 subject marks are reserved for Engineering Mathematics. It sits in the other group, where the 85 subject marks are undivided. Engineering Mathematics does still appear inside RA, as Section A.1 of the RA syllabus printed in the brochure.
- RA can be taken as a second paper. Table 4 lists RA's allowed partner papers as EE, ME, DA, CS, EC and IN, and each of those six papers lists RA in return. The brochure marks that table tentative and subject to change.

The sectional paper codes that changed
| Sectional paper | Common section (2026 → 2027) | Optional sections (2026 → 2027) |
|---|---|---|
| XE — Engineering Sciences | XE-A → XE0, Engineering Mathematics, 15 marks | XE-B to XE-I → XE1 to XE8; the former standalone TF paper → XE9 |
| XH — Humanities & Social Sciences | XH-B1 → XH0, Reasoning and Comprehension, 25 marks | XH-C1 to XH-C6 → XH1 to XH6 |
| XL — Life Sciences | XL-P → XL0, Chemistry, 25 marks | XL-Q to XL-U → XL1 to XL5 |

Both the GATE 2026 code and the GATE 2027 code for every section are printed in that table; the section names and mark values above are the brochure's own. The per-section names behind each range — for example XE1 Fluid Mechanics or XL1 Biochemistry — are listed in the same table.
The line that matters most: the syllabus has been revised
The highlights page says the syllabus of GATE 2027 test papers has been revised and advises candidates to check it. It does not say which papers changed, or how much. Below is what changed for each of the seven papers IAE teaches between the GATE 2026 syllabus (IIT Guwahati) and the GATE 2027 syllabus (IIT Madras). Two of the seven have no listing change at all.

Did your paper's syllabus change?
| Paper | What the comparison found | Comparison page |
|---|---|---|
| EC — Electronics and Communication | Changes in 6 of 8 sections: 10 newly listed, 2 no longer named, 4 qualifier changes. | /resources/gate-ec-2027-syllabus-changes |
| EE — Electrical Engineering | No listing change. The one difference is a spelling correction: “Butterwoth” in 2026, “Butterworth” in 2027. | None — nothing to report |
| IN — Instrumentation Engineering | Changes in 10 of 10 sections: 60 newly listed, 14 no longer named, 5 moved between sections, 17 qualifier changes. | /resources/gate-in-2027-syllabus-changes |
| CS — Computer Science and IT | Changes in 3 of 10 sections: 3 newly listed, 7 no longer named, 11 qualifier changes. | /resources/gate-cs-2027-syllabus-changes |
| DA — Data Science and AI | No listing change. Both PDFs list the same items; the 2027 PDF only presents them under numbered sections. | None — nothing to report |
| BT — Biotechnology | Changes in 7 of 7 sections: 21 newly listed, 9 no longer named, 8 moved between sections, 5 qualifier changes. | /resources/gate-bt-2027-syllabus-changes |
| CE — Civil Engineering | Changes in 8 of 8 sections: 32 newly listed, 7 no longer named, 4 moved between sections, 12 qualifier changes. | /resources/gate-ce-2027-syllabus-changes |
Source: Each row compares that paper's official GATE 2026 syllabus PDF (organising institute IIT Guwahati) with its official GATE 2027 syllabus PDF (IIT Madras), both as of 15 September 2026. Papers with changes link to a page that lists them. “Nothing to report” means the two syllabi list the same topics. The index of all five comparisons is at /resources/gate-2027-syllabus-changes.
Which papers changed shape, and which moved most
Two of the five changed papers changed shape, not only content. Civil Engineering gains an eighth section, Construction Materials and Management. The 2026 PDF carried that material as a block inside Section 2, Structural Engineering; in 2027 it is a section in its own right, and items such as PERT and CPM sit inside it. Biotechnology goes the other way: the 2026 section Bioprocess Engineering and Process Biotechnology has no counterpart in the 2027 PDF, so 2027 prints six sections where 2026 printed seven, and the Bioreaction Engineering list is printed inside Section 4, Fundamentals of Biological Engineering. The other three changed their listings without changing shape. Instrumentation moved most: all ten of its sections newly list something. Computer Science moved across the fewest sections — three of its ten — but eleven of that paper's twenty-one entries fall in a single section, Computer Networks. The section-by-section detail for each of these lives on that paper's comparison page, where every entry quotes both PDFs.

What “no longer named” means, and what it does not
Where the comparison says an item is no longer named in 2027, that is a statement about the printed syllabus and nothing more: the 2027 PDF does not print that item. It is not a statement about what the examination may ask. An organising institute publishes a syllabus, which is a list of what is included, not a list of exclusions. Where an item instead moved between sections, or kept its place but gained or lost a qualifier, the comparison says so in those words.

What to do with this
Download the official 2027 PDF for your paper, free, from our syllabus page, and read it against the comparison for your paper if one exists. If you sit EE or DA, there is nothing to re-plan: your 2027 listing is the same as your 2026 listing. If you sit CE, BT, IN, EC or CS, read your comparison page before you rebuild a study plan around a 2026 syllabus. Registration dates, the application fee, eligibility and how long a GATE score stays valid are not covered here. They are on our GATE 2027 application checklist, from the same brochure.
