Answer and solution

ANSWER

The set of support vectors is , option (D).

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2024 DA (IISc Bengaluru)

  1. Positives: , , . Negatives: , , . The data are linearly separable, since for every positive and for every negative.

  2. A hard-margin SVM finds the separating line with the largest margin. Equivalently, the boundary is the perpendicular bisector of the shortest segment joining the convex hull of the positives to the convex hull of the negatives.

  3. Compute for each point. Positives: for . Negatives: for .

  4. Take and . Then for , and it equals for . All constraints hold, and the points with value exactly are .

  5. Check that this is the maximum margin. The point lies on the segment (in the positive hull) and lies on the segment (in the negative hull). Their distance is , so no separating margin can be wider than . The solution above has margin width , so it is optimal. The hard-margin SVM solution is unique, so this is the trained classifier.

  6. Support vectors are the training points lying exactly on the margin. Here these are . Indeed is attainable, for example with , which also satisfies .

  7. Options A, B and C each contain , but , so lies strictly outside the margin and cannot be a support vector. The answer is D.

KEY IDEA

Support vectors are the points exactly on the margin. Find the maximum-margin hyperplane (the bisector of the closest pair of points in the two convex hulls), then pick the points with .

WATCH OUT FOR

Assuming the far points and must be support vectors because they look extreme. Support vectors are the points closest to the boundary, not the farthest ones; points well outside the margin have zero multiplier.
