Answer and solution

ANSWER

The answer is (D): and always have the same rank.

Official answer: DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 DA (IIT Roorkee)

  1. Both and satisfy , so they are valid test matrices for every option.

  2. Option (A): for we have , but is not invertible. So (A) is not always correct.

  3. Option (B): for we have and . So (B) is not always correct.

  4. Option (C): for the sum of the diagonal elements is , and for it is . So (C) is not always correct.

  5. Option (D), first inequality: since , the column space of lies inside the column space of is not needed. We only need . Applied to it gives .

  6. Option (D), second inequality: applied to the same rule gives .

  7. Together, for every real with .

  8. Cross-check by eigenvalues: is annihilated by , which has distinct roots. So is diagonalizable with eigenvalues in . Its rank is the number of nonzero eigenvalues. has eigenvalues , and , so the rank is unchanged.

  9. Only (D) holds for every such .

KEY IDEA

For an ALWAYS-correct statement, test the extreme cases and to knock out the false options. Then prove the survivor in general. Here and squeeze the ranks together, because a product never has larger rank than either factor.

WATCH OUT FOR

Assuming forces to be invertible (cancelling to get ) or to have a particular determinant or trace. Cancelling is illegal when is singular. The matrix and the matrix both satisfy the condition and give different invertibility, determinant and trace.
