GATE 2026 · BTQ.64 · 2 marks · NAT

A disease-associated allele shows X-linked recessive inheritance. If the mother is a carrier of the disease, the father is genetically normal, and the child born is a son, then the probability that he is born with the disease is ________. (rounded off to one decimal place)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The probability that the son is born with the disease is 0.5.

Official answer: 0.5Source: Official answer key, GATE 2026 BT (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Mother is a carrier of the X-linked recessive disease allele: genotype (heterozygous, unaffected).

  2. Father is genetically normal for this locus: genotype .

  3. A son receives his single X chromosome only from his mother and his Y chromosome only from his father; the father's X allele is never passed to a son.

  4. Because the mother is heterozygous, she transmits or to any child with equal probability each, and this segregation ratio does not depend on the sex of the child.

  5. Given that the child born is a son, the son's genotype at this locus is determined entirely by which maternal X allele he inherited.

  6. .

KEY IDEA

For an X-linked recessive disease, a son receives his only X chromosome from his mother (his Y comes from the father), so the father's genotype is irrelevant to a son's risk — only the mother's carrier (heterozygous) genotype matters.

WATCH OUT FOR

Trying to factor in the father's genotype for a son's risk (fathers cannot pass an X-linked allele to sons), or confusing this with a daughter's risk, which would require the father's X allele and give a different probability.
