GATE 2023 EE GA question 5: A parallelogram drawn in blue lines.Tap to open full size
Figure from the GATE 2023 EE paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

A parallelogram drawn in blue lines. Its top and bottom sides are horizontal, and the top side is shifted to the right of the bottom side, so the left and right sides slope up to the right. Label the corners A (bottom-left), B (bottom-right), C (top-right) and D (top-left). Both diagonals are drawn: the long one from A (bottom-left) to C (top-right), and the short, steep one from D (top-left) to B (bottom-right). The two diagonals cross at the centre O. The midpoints of the four sides, Q on AB, R on BC, P on CD and L on DA, are joined in order L-P, P-R, R-Q, Q-L. This makes an inner parallelogram that looks almost like a tilted rectangle. Its sides L-P and Q-R are parallel to diagonal AC, and its sides L-Q and P-R are parallel to diagonal DB. Diagonal AC crosses L-Q at E and P-R at F. Diagonal DB crosses L-P at H and Q-R at G. There are no other lines and no labels in the printed figure.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The figure contains 20 triangles, so the answer is option (C).

Official answer: CSource: Official answer key, GATE 2023 EE (IIT Kanpur)

  1. Label the figure. Corners: bottom-left, bottom-right, top-right, top-left. Side midpoints: on , on , on , on . Centre: , where the diagonals and cross. Diagonal cuts at and at . Diagonal cuts at and at .

  2. Sort the ten drawn lines by direction. The inner quadrilateral joins the midpoints of the sides, and the midpoint theorem says a segment joining the midpoints of two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side. In triangles and this gives . In triangles and it gives . So there are only four directions: horizontal (, ), slant (, ), the direction (, , ) and the direction (, , ). Parallel lines never meet, so the three sides of every triangle must come from three different directions. Count the triangles in groups by size so that none is missed or counted twice.

  3. Smallest triangles: a diagonal cuts each corner triangle in two. That gives 8: .

  4. The four corner triangles that the inner parallelogram cuts off give 4 more: .

  5. Triangles with their apex at the centre give 4: .

  6. Half-parallelograms, each cut off by one diagonal, give 4: (diagonal ) and (diagonal ).

  7. No triangle lies inside the inner parallelogram . Every segment drawn inside it (, and the piece of ; , and the piece of ) runs in one of only two directions, and a triangle needs three. The diagonals just divide it into four small parallelograms, such as .

  8. Check that the list is complete by picking three of the four directions: horizontal, slant and give (4). Horizontal, slant and give (4). Horizontal, and give (6). Slant, and give (6). These are the same 20 triangles.

  9. Total: . The answer is (C).

KEY IDEA

Label every corner and crossing point, then sort the lines into parallel families: here there are four (horizontal, slant, and the two diagonal directions, with the inner parallelogram's sides parallel to the diagonals by the midpoint theorem). A triangle needs three sides from three different families. Count the triangles by size, then check the total by working through each choice of three families.

WATCH OUT FOR

Counting only the small triangles you can see at a glance and missing the large ones. If you leave out the four half-parallelograms (, , , ) you get 16, which is option (B). If you also miss the four corner triangles (, , , ) that a diagonal splits in two, you get 12, which is option (A). Some students also look for triangles inside the inner parallelogram. There are none, because every line inside it runs in one of only two directions.
