Answer and solution

ANSWER

The smallest digit that makes 715■423 divisible by 3 is 2 (digit sum 24), so the answer is option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2018 EC (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Divisibility rule for 3: a whole number is divisible by 3 exactly when the sum of its digits is divisible by 3. Where the missing digit sits in the number does not matter for this test. (The paper says "thousandths"; the digit is actually in the thousands place of 715■423.)

  2. Add the known digits: .

  3. Call the missing digit , where is one of . The digit sum is , so must be a multiple of 3.

  4. , so leaves remainder 1 when divided by 3. For to leave remainder 0, must leave remainder 2, so .

  5. The smallest of these is . Check: the digit sum becomes , so is divisible by 3. (Directly: .)

  6. Check the other options. (A) : the digit sum is , not a multiple of 3, so this fails. (C) : the digit sum is , which works, but , so it is not the smallest. (D) : the digit sum is , not a multiple of 3, so this fails.

  7. The smallest whole number that can go in place of ■ is , which is option (B).

KEY IDEA

A number is divisible by 3 exactly when its digit sum is. The known digits add to 22, which leaves remainder 1 when divided by 3, so the missing digit must leave remainder 2 (2, 5 or 8). The smallest of these is 2.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the divisibility rule for 9 instead of 3. The next multiple of 9 after 22 is 27, which gives 5, a trap set as option (C). Another slip is choosing (A) 0 just because it is the smallest whole number, without checking it: a digit sum of 22 is not divisible by 3.
