GATE 2026 · INGA Q.8 · 2 marks · MCQ

In a population, patients who have high cholesterol also have high blood-pressure (BP). Some patients with high BP also have diabetes. There are no patients who have both high cholesterol and diabetes. Furthermore,

1. the total number of patients with at least one of these conditions is 75,
2. the number of patients with high cholesterol is 10,
3. the number of patients with high BP is 45, and
4. the number of patients with only high BP and no other conditions is 20.

Then the number of patients who have both diabetes and high BP is ______

  1. (A)

Answer and solution

ANSWER

15 patients have both diabetes and high BP. The answer is option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 IN (IIT Guwahati)

  1. Write the statements as set relations. Let , and be the sets of patients with high cholesterol, high BP and diabetes. Everyone with high cholesterol also has high BP, so . No one has both high cholesterol and diabetes, so . The data give , , , and only high BP .

  2. Split the high-BP group into parts that do not overlap. Because and , no patient has all three conditions, so the high-BP group has exactly three parts: (i) high BP with high cholesterol and no diabetes ; (ii) only high BP ; (iii) high BP with diabetes and no high cholesterol .

  3. The three parts make up the whole high-BP group:

  4. Check against the total. Since , the union is , so the number with only diabetes is . That is a valid non-negative count, and agrees with "Some patients with high BP also have diabetes". The data are consistent.

  5. Because , every patient with both diabetes and high BP is in part (iii). So , which is option (B).

KEY IDEA

Write "all X are Y" as and "no one is both" as . Then no one has all three conditions, and the high-BP circle splits into three separate parts: cholesterol + BP, only BP, and BP + diabetes. Subtract the two known parts from to get the third. The total of 75 is only needed to check that the numbers fit.

WATCH OUT FOR

Using the total of 75 to find the overlap. For example, gives option (C), but that counts the cholesterol group twice: it lies inside the BP group and is already part of the 45. Another error is to subtract only the 20 "only high BP" patients from 45 and answer 25, which forgets that the 10 cholesterol patients are also in the high-BP group.
