Figure from the ISRO CS 2025 paper. It is part of the question.
Figure description

Undirected graph on 8 vertices a, b, c, d, e, f, g, h. Edges: a-f, a-e, e-d, e-f, e-g, f-g, f-h, f-b, g-h, g-c, g-d, h-b, h-c. Layout: a top-left, f top-centre, b top-right, e left-middle, h right-middle, d bottom-left, g bottom-centre, c bottom-right. Triangles e-f-g and f-g-h share edge f-g; e and h are not adjacent.

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The chromatic number of the graph is 3, option (A).

Official answer: ASource: ISRO's final answer key of 15 May 2026

  1. Read the edges from the figure: -, -, -, -, -, -, -, -, -, -, -, -, -.

  2. Lower bound: , , are mutually adjacent (a triangle), so at least 3 colours are needed.

  3. The triangles and share the edge , but and are not adjacent, so there is no . That alone does not rule out 4 colours, so try to colour the graph with 3.

  4. Colour , , . Vertex is adjacent to and but not to , so .

  5. Vertex is adjacent to (colour 1) and (colour 3), so . Vertex is adjacent to (colour 3) and (colour 2), so .

  6. Vertex is adjacent to (colour 1) and (colour 3), so . Vertex is adjacent to (colour 2) and (colour 3), so .

  7. Every one of the 13 edges joins vertices of different colours, so 3 colours suffice. With the lower bound of 3, the chromatic number is 3.

KEY IDEA

A triangle forces at least 3 colours. Then show a proper 3-colouring exists by colouring the triangle first and extending vertex by vertex, which settles the chromatic number as exactly 3.

WATCH OUT FOR

Seeing many triangles and dense edges around and and guessing 4 or more. Chromatic number is bounded below by cliques, not by edge count; here the largest clique is a triangle and a 3-colouring exists.
