Answer and solution

ANSWER

The time constant is about 2 s. Option (B).

Official answer: BSource: Official answer key, GATE 2025 EE (IIT Roorkee)

  1. A stable first-order system that starts from rest has the step response , where is the time constant. The column gives the final value .

  2. Rearrange to get from any single reading:

  3. At : , so .

  4. At : , so .

  5. At : , so . At : , so .

  6. Quick check with the 63.2% rule. At the output is of its final value: . That value falls between the readings at () and (), so lies between 1.6 s and 2.6 s. Only option (B) is in that range.

  7. All four data points give the same value, . That agreement also confirms the model assumed in step 1 (first order, starting from zero output). Answer: option (B).

KEY IDEA

For a first-order step response , normalise every reading by the final value (here 3). Then at any point. Equivalently, is the time at which the output reaches 63.2% of .

WATCH OUT FOR

Forgetting that the final value is 3, not 1. Looking for an output of 0.632 puts between 0.6 s and 1.6 s and leads to option (A). The 63.2% mark is . A second trap is treating as the 2% settling time , which gives . In fact , which is about .
