GATE 2026 · CS1Q.19 · 1 mark · MSQ

Which of the following statements is/are true with respect to the interaction of a web browser with a web server using HTTP 1.1?

  1. (A)

HTTP 1.1 facilitates downloading multiple objects of the same webpage over the same TCP connection, if the objects are stored in the same server

  2. (B)

HTTP 1.1 facilitates downloading multiple objects of the same webpage over the same TCP connection, even if they are stored in different servers

  3. (C)

HTTP 1.1 facilitates sending a request for downloading one object without waiting for a previously requested object to be downloaded completely

  4. (D)

HTTP 1.1 facilitates downloading multiple webpages on the same server to be downloaded over a single TCP connection

Answer and solution

ANSWER

The true statements are (A), (C) and (D).

Official answer: A, C, DSource: Official answer key, GATE 2026 CS1 (IIT Guwahati)

  1. HTTP 1.1 uses persistent connections by default. The TCP connection stays open after a response, so later requests reuse it instead of opening a new connection for each object.

  2. A TCP connection joins the browser to one server, identified by its IP address and port. Reuse is therefore possible only for objects held on that same server. So (A) is true and (B) is false, because objects on a different server need a separate connection.

  3. Persistence is not tied to one page. The connection stays open for any further request to that server, so objects of several webpages can use it one after another. So (D) is true.

  4. HTTP 1.1 also allows pipelining. The client may send several requests back to back without waiting for the earlier responses to finish, and the server returns the responses in the order the requests arrived. So (C) is true.

  5. True statements: (A), (C) and (D).

KEY IDEA

HTTP 1.1 keeps one TCP connection open per server (persistent connection) and allows pipelined requests. Whatever goes over that connection, whether objects or whole pages, must come from the same server.

WATCH OUT FOR

Thinking one connection can carry objects from different servers (B). A TCP connection ends at a single server. Another slip is to treat persistence as limited to one webpage, which makes (D) look false.
