Information theory formulas

Information theory: entropy, source coding and channel capacity. 23 formulas for GATE EC, IN Communications, each with when to use it. Each is explained in the topic notes.

All 23 Information theory formulas

INFORMATION OF A SYMBOL

Always non-negative; a certain event () carries 0 bits.

ENTROPY OF A DMS

Average information per symbol. Take .

BOUNDS ON ENTROPY

Minimum 0 when one symbol has probability 1; maximum when all symbols are equiprobable.

BINARY ENTROPY FUNCTION

Entropy of a two-symbol source. , symmetric about , .

EXTENDED SOURCE

For the th extension of a DMS (blocks of independent symbols, block symbols).

JOINT AND CONDITIONAL ENTROPY

Chain rule. If and are independent, . The conditional entropy is an average: .

MUTUAL INFORMATION

Symmetric in and ; , with equality exactly when and are independent.

MUTUAL INFORMATION FROM PROBABILITIES

Here and . Terms with contribute 0.

AVERAGE CODE LENGTH

Binary code alphabet.

KRAFT INEQUALITY

A binary prefix code with lengths exists if and only if this holds. Every uniquely decodable binary code also satisfies it, so nothing is gained in length by giving up the prefix property. It tests lengths only; a set of codewords can obey it and still not be prefix-free.

SOURCE CODING THEOREM

The lower bound holds for every uniquely decodable binary code; an optimal binary prefix code (e.g. Huffman) also meets the upper bound. Using the th extension, .

EFFICIENCY AND REDUNDANCY

Binary code. For a code alphabet of symbols, . A binary code with has ; this needs every to be a power of .

CHANNEL CAPACITY

For a channel used times per second, the capacity is bits/s.

BINARY SYMMETRIC CHANNEL (CROSSOVER PROBABILITY P)

Reached with equiprobable inputs. at or , and at .

BSC WITH INPUT P(X=1) = Α

From : for every input, and . The maximum, at , is .

BINARY ERASURE CHANNEL (ERASURE PROBABILITY Ε)

Each bit is either received correctly or marked as erased; reached with equiprobable inputs.

BEC WITH INPUT P(X=1) = Α

From : the input is known unless the bit is erased, so . The maximum, at , is .

DIFFERENTIAL ENTROPY (CONTINUOUS SOURCE)

Unlike discrete entropy, it can be negative. Uniform on an interval of length : . Gaussian with variance : , the largest value for any density with that variance.

SHANNON-HARTLEY LAW

Band-limited AWGN channel of bandwidth Hz. is the average received signal power and is the power ratio (not dB); with two-sided noise PSD .

SNR IN DECIBELS

Convert to a ratio before using in the law: 20 dB means 100, 30 dB means 1000.

INFINITE-BANDWIDTH LIMIT

At fixed signal power , capacity grows with but saturates, because the noise power grows too.

SHANNON LIMIT (CONDITION FOR RELIABLE COMMUNICATION)

is the energy per bit. With and : , which tends to as . Below this, no reliable communication is possible at any positive rate.

BANDWIDTH-SNR TRADE-OFF

For a target rate , a smaller bandwidth needs an exponentially larger SNR; a larger bandwidth allows a lower SNR.
