AI Is Not Replacing Engineers — Here's What It's Actually Doing to Engineering Careers

Every quarter, a new round of 'AI is replacing software engineers' headlines circulates. Every quarter, the engineers we know get busier. These two facts are not in contradiction — they're describing the same shift from different angles.
What AI is actually doing
AI is compressing the time it takes to produce low-complexity code. Boilerplate, CRUD APIs, basic tests — a capable engineer with AI tools now produces in two hours what previously took two days. This doesn't eliminate engineering roles. It eliminates the justification for hiring five mid-level engineers to do what one senior engineer with AI tooling can now do.
The engineers most at risk
Mid-level engineers whose entire value proposition is output speed. If your answer to 'what do you bring?' is 'I can write X lines of code per day,' you are in the category being compressed. This is exactly why deep fundamentals matter: building real expertise in core GATE disciplines such as CS, EC, EE, IN, BT, and DA develops the analytical thinking, technical depth, and problem-solving ability that higher studies, research, PSU recruitment, and long engineering careers are actually built on.
The engineers who are thriving
The ones who've made AI part of their daily workflow — not as a crutch, but as a thinking tool. They use it to explore solution spaces faster, to review their own code with a different lens, to document without losing momentum. They're also the ones building things that weren't economically viable before AI made certain steps trivially fast.
What this means for students starting out today
Learn to think in systems before you learn to type in syntax. Understand why an architecture decision is made before you learn how to implement it. Build things. Ship things. Use AI tools, but always ask yourself: do I understand what this produced? Could I have explained this approach without the AI generating it? If the answer is no, you're using AI as a replacement for understanding, not as an accelerant.
Our honest take
The engineers who will struggle are those who spent the last two years dismissing AI tools as hype, and not building systems-level thinking. The engineers who will do well are those who are intellectually curious, technically grounded, and honest about what they don't know. Those characteristics haven't changed since engineering existed.
